The DC Studios logo is located in a rainy alley in Gotham
Scenario
After the events of Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, tries to take the reins of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Aside from the bat signal in the closing shot of the season finale, we never got Robert Pattinson’s cameo in «The Penguin.» In this short video IMDb tries to answer: Where the hell was Batman?. Colin Farrell struggled to get his version of the penguin to smoke in Batman (2022), but failed. However, for his own series, the character was portrayed as a casual smoker, preferring cigars.
The tone and atmosphere are absolutely perfect
The umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Featured in Graham Norton and the Fans: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). It’s a sleazy, dirty, dark film, but Farrell is able to capture that glimmer of charm that Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano managed.
Where to start with Farrell
There are similarities with the Sopranos, especially in tone. There’s a lot of dark stuff in this opening episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Amazing is the right word. I love seeing talented actors give their all to roles like this, and the makeup/CGI or whatever it takes to physically turn him into a penguin not only passes the eye test, but looks incredibly realistic.
And Farrell as an actor completely immersed himself in this role
There’s always the risk that if the makeup isn’t good enough or just a little off, it can be downright distracting. At Penguin, it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the series because it’s a damn good job. I might be a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors before this series, but I think this will get him the praise he deserves. I never really jump right into new series because I like to watch all the episodes at once, but I wanted to see how this one actually turned out.
